Redskins v. Titans Preview

Coming from somewhere deep underground, it’s the Two Tone Blue Rant, sponsored by Joe’s Taco Truck. Joe has over thirty years of experience in the business. After the ringworm incident, Joe’s voluntarily decided to close the restaurant and take his fine product the streets. So if you see a gray van with a giant taco drawn on it, you know what time it is. Taco time!

Hello Titans fans. It has been an inconsistent month as life has made this difficult. But I am now here, and I am happy to heap praise on the Titans. This win streak has been one of the most fun ones in recent years. They’ve had two blowouts in a row, I cannot remembered the last time that happened, maybe 2016 or even as far back as the Jeff Fisher era. Of course one man has cause the team to perform in such a dominant way. He’s less of a man and more of a giant, a king, or el tractorcito. Of course it’s Derrick Henry. I was wrong to ever doubt him. He’s looked like the best running back in the league. The transformation has been almost shocking. I think the line has been blocking better and the play calling as improved, but most of all Henry is playing significantly better. If he can keep maintain this level of play, the team can ride him into the playoffs.

As for the rest of the offense, they have played more or less the same. The line as been blocking better. Kelly has looked better than Conklin this year, although I do hate to lose Conklin for the year, but I do not think he was ever healthy. The receivers are not dropping as much, but they have still struggled. I think the team will have to sign and draft a few receivers in the offseason. However, Davis has looked good at times. I still do not think they throw it to him enough that could be a LafFeur or a Mariota problem. The tight ends have been ravished by injuries. I am disappointed to see Smith go to IR. He was looking much better. I thought we would see the Firk-show, but it never came against the Giants. Maybe it will open in Nashville this Saturday. Mariota has been inconsistent, but they have not really needed him, especially against the Giants. He will have to make big plays if they want to make the playoffs.

The defense has looked great. However, I do not want to demean their performances, but they were playing against two of the worst offenses in the league. The outside pass rush still has some issues. Landry seems to disappear at times. While Morgan and Orakpo have not been anywhere near as effective as they used to be. I thought Finch looked great until he got injured. Hopefully this week it will not be a significant issue, but it most certainly will be a problem against the Colts. I think Evans has looked spectacular, as have Jackson and Byard. Butler has also played much better. The loss of Ryan is devastating. He’s arguable been the team’s best player on defense. They have some decent depth, so they may be able to overcome it. Perhaps Jackson will takeover in the slot.

So here they are, the team needs to win out to make the playoffs. They have Washington up first. They have been cursed with a myriad of injuries this year. I believe they are down to their 4th string qb. They have also been quite porous on run defense. Thus, this appears to be an easy win for the Titans but I still have my doubts. Mostly because it would be the most Titans thing ever to come out flat and lose to an awful Washington team.

Obviously they should win tomorrow and we should be looking at an all or nothing game against the Colts next week. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. You never know with the Titans. Well it has been a fun few weeks. Let’s hope they can keep it up and roll into the postseason. Until next time keep those thumbtacks flaming.

Two Tone Blue Rant

Coming from somewhere deep underground, it’s the Two Tone Blue Rant, sponsored no one in particular. We’ve had a lot of issues recently.

Hello Titans fans. It has been a roller coast of a month. One week we get the good Titans, then we get the bad and last week both teams showed up in the game. The first half of the Jets game was a disaster. I was ready to throw my TV out of the window and call for the team to disband. However, they played much better in the second half. Thus, I am hopeful.

The defense actually played fairly well for the majority of the game. They were giving up a lot of run plays, and appeared to have some issues on passing downs early, but I am assuming Pees made some adjustments, because they pretty much shut them out in the second half. I think however that the pass rush is considerably bad. Moran and Orakpo are done, which really pains me to say because I really like them and appreciate everything that they have done for the franchise. (On a side note Morgan is the second longest tenured Titan behind Kern. Morgan was Jeff Fisher’s last first round pick with the team in 2010 while Kern was signed in 2009.) As of late I have been somewhat disappointed by Landry. He looked so good early in the season but has appeared to hit a rookie wall. The defensive line has also been inconsistent at best. Casey has been good, but he’s double-teamed every play, which has severely limited his production. While Jones and Johnson have been mediocre. I do not know what happened to Jones. He was pretty good last year, but has essentially disappeared this season. Perhaps the injury is still affecting him. Johnson has been a total whiff. The second round picks of the 2016 draft have been a disaster. Due to the pass rush issues the team has to blitz more, which worked against the Jets in part because the secondary and linebackers played well. Evans has been great recently, him and Landry have inversed each other. Also because the Jets are terrible.

As for the offense, they have been better, but still not great. I like the adjustments to the line. I was surprised that Spain was who they took out. I thought Kline was the big issue. But it seemed to work. The Jets have a good d-line with Leonard Williams, so it was encouraging to see a better performance. The running game was ok, and I am begging to think Henry should get the ball more. As for the passing game, the receivers are pretty much garbage with the exception of Davis. I would like to see the team concentrate on throwing to Davis more. I know he’s double covered a lot, but he’s by far the team’s best receiver and he’s 6-3 just lob it up to him occasionally. He can make plays, they just need to give him the ball more. Maybe they could revive the failed Randy Ratio. They can call it the Davis Division. 40% of every pass play goes to Davis! Speaking of not getting the ball enough, could the team please throw more to Firkser? All he does is catch everything thrown to him. He’s been a pleasant surprise in a tumultuous season. Of course, I must mention Mariota. He’s played much better recently.

Well here we are, Jags v. Titans a Thursday night tradition. What are my expectations? I have none. This team is so hard to predict. On paper they should win. The Jags are a disaster on offense and traditionally their defense has been less than great against the Titans, but this team is a complete skizo so any outcome could happen. I would however hope to see offensive line improvements. The Jags have a great defensive line, so it will be a challenge, but if they keep Jones at guard and Levin at center and they hold up it will definitely be encouraging. It goes without saying, but if they can keep the pocket clean they should have some opportunities to score. I could see the Titans attempt to take advantage of the Jacksonville’s aggression and maybe throw a few screens. Regardless though, they will play very conservatively. As for the Titans defense, they just need to stop the run. If they can do that, then they should limit Jacksonville’s scoring ability.

I am really expecting a slow and lumbering game that will end 12 to 9. The Titans season really depends on a win. I am hopping that they go out and take it like they did against the Patriots. But honestly who knows what team shows up. Regardless I am pulling for them and until next time keep those thumbtacks flaming.
